When you think of adverse weather conditions affecting flights, you probably think of rain, hail, snow, or ice, but not heat. This summer’s heat is adding more fire to the general aviation turmoil.
The business jet sector isn’t quite facing the same issues that the larger commercial vessels face during a hot season for a few reasons, but that doesn’t mean the heat won’t affect a private jet. To avoid extreme heat turmoil, let’s follow some basic tips and tricks for staying safe in the heat.
Depending on the aircraft, a jet might not be able to fly due to the temperature outside. In the past, airlines have been grounded due to 118 degrees Fahrenheit temps.
Check the jet manual to see what degrees you are not allowed to fly over or under. That way you are prepared for any time of year.
An aircraft sitting in the sun will affect the capabilities of the engine. With a hot start, it may have difficulty starting at all. A Hot Start, as defined on Skybrary, in any variant of a jet engine refers to the circumstance where the manufacturer-defined limiting temperature for start has been exceeded. Refer to your manufacturer’s manual, as we mentioned above, to ensure you can start your engines.
To prevent a hot start, try finding somewhere in the shade to park the jet. Hangar space is not always available, so find the next best thing. Try keeping all your shades down in the aircraft to keep the interior as cool as possible. Talk to your FBO about possibly bringing it indoors prior to a day before departure to allow time for the airplane to cool off.
The tires on an aircraft are also affected by the heat. Check the pressure of each tire to make sure it is at the correct PSI. Heat expands, which means tires expand. This expansion may cause overinflated tires, which may cause them to blow. Though these tires are designed for high-pressure situations you do not want to cause any additional stress.
Aircraft haven’t been able to land due to hot surfaces melting the rubber tires. Be sure to check your destination’s temperatures and ask if there are any issues with landing. This will help eliminate any delays or costly repositioning fees.
